Improving Convergence Time of Routing Protocols

چکیده
One of the main design goals of the Internet is robustness against failures. Normally, this is accomplished by redundancy and dynamic routing protocols that automatically adapt to failures: If a link is unavailable, data packets can generally be sent via alternative paths. An essential requirement for this is a fast mechanism for failure detection, since routing protocols can only start to reroute traffic around problems as soon as they get aware of them. This paper proposes a novel design of a generic failure detection service to be utilized by routing protocols that aims at dramatically decreasing the detection times of today’s mechanisms. After the introduction of the concept and its evaluation, the integration of the new failure detection service into BGP is described. Furthermore, an example for the adaption of a routing protocol using the proposed service is given.

Improving Internet-wide routing protocols convergence with MRPC timers
The behavior of routing protocols during convergence is critical as it impacts end-to-end performance. Network convergence is particularly important in BGP, the current interdomain routing protocol. In order to decrease the amount of exchanged routing messages and transient routes, BGP routers rely on MRAI timers [35] and route flap damping [40]. These timers are intended to limit the exchange ...

Vehicular ad hoc networks are an emerging technology with an extensive capability in various applications including vehicles safety, traffic management and intelligent transportation systems. Considering the high mobility of vehicles and their inhomogeneous distributions, designing an efficient routing protocol seems necessary. Given the fact that a road is crowded at some sections and is not c...
متن کاملImproving Quality of Service Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks Using OLSR
Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) are constructed by mobile nodes without access point. Since MANET has certain constraints, including power shortages, an unstable wireless environment and node mobility, more power-efficient and reliable routing protocols are needed. The OLSR protocol is an optimization of the classical link state algorithm. OLSR introduces an interesting concept, the multipoint r...

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) are receiving a significant interest and are becoming very popular in the world of wireless networks and telecommunication. MANETs consist of mobile nodes which can communicate with each other without any infrastructure or centralized administration. In MANETs, the movement of nodes is unpredictable and complex; thus making the routing of the packets challenging....

The decentralized control scheme for routing in current IP networks has been questioned, and a centralized routing scheme has been proposed as an alternative. In this paper, we compare the convergence of centralized control scheme with decentralized link-state routing protocols. We first identify the components of the convergence time. Thereafter, we study how to achieve fast routing convergenc...

In an enterprise network, it is normal to use multiple dynamic routing protocols for forwarding packets. Therefore, the route redistribution is an important issue in an enterprise network that has been configured by multiple different routing protocols in its routers. In this study, we analyse the performance of the combination of three routing protocols in each scenario and make a comparison a...
